Psyvariar 3 is officially locked in for May 21, with Red Art Games confirming the cult shoot ’em up sequel is heading to Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. For fans of arcade shooters, bullet grazing, and games that expect your hands to keep up with your brain, that is very welcome news.
Developed by Banana Bytes and Red Art Studios, the game marks the return of a series that first appeared in Japanese arcades over 20 years ago. That gives this sequel a fair bit of history behind it, but it also looks like it is trying to do more than simply coast on old name recognition.
A cult shooter returns
The big hook, once again, is Psyvariar’s buzz mechanic. Rather than simply dodging enemy fire, players are encouraged to skim dangerously close to bullets to build score and power. It is the sort of system that makes a shooter feel just that little bit more reckless, which is usually where the fun starts.
Psyvariar 3 will feature seven playable pilots, each with their own abilities, scoring systems, and bomb styles. There is also a guest appearance from Cotton, which feels like a very fitting crossover for a game this gleefully arcade-minded.

Built for score chasers and repeat runs
Beyond its core arcade mode, Psyvariar 3 brings a decent spread of extra options with it. Players can expect Arrange, Mission, Caravan, Endless, and Practice modes, along with branching difficulty routes and boss encounters that change depending on performance.
That all sounds promising for anyone who likes a shooter with a bit of replay value rather than a one-and-done clear. Psyvariar has always been a series that rewards confidence and repeated runs, so it makes sense to see that idea pushed a bit further here.
Modern features without ditching its roots
Red Art is pitching Psyvariar 3 as a faithful continuation of the series, but one that has also been refined for modern platforms. That means updated controls, improved accessibility, and support for 120fps on Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on compatible displays.
Visually, it is leaning into a neo-retro 3D style inspired by the earlier games, which feels like the right call. This does not look like a reboot trying to reinvent the wheel. It looks like a sequel that knows exactly what sort of wheel it wants to spin.

Psyvariar 3 physical editions are on the way too
If digital releases do not quite scratch the itch, there is also a physical PS5 release planned in Europe. Standard and Deluxe editions are on the way, with the Deluxe version limited to 500 copies and exclusive to Red Art Games’ online store.
That sort of thing will not matter to everyone, but for collectors and longtime shoot ’em up fans, it is a nice extra touch.
Our take
We always have a bit of time for games like this. Not because every retro revival automatically deserves applause, but because it is good to see older, slightly stranger series getting another shot instead of being left to gather dust.
Psyvariar 3 is clearly aimed at a specific crowd, and that is no bad thing. It looks fast, stylish, unapologetically arcade, and nicely aware of what made the series stand out in the first place. If it sticks the landing, this could be one of those releases that quietly becomes a favourite among shmup fans.
Psyvariar 3 launches on May 21 for Switch 2, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.
